This project aims to enhance the quality of psychosocial issues in the context of diabetes management. Indeed, in the Diabetes centre of the VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the described procedure is part of clinical routine (www.diabetescentrum.nl).

The confidentiality of data from this project is guaranteed, as is specified in the section of Data Management. Patients have the principle right to refuse the assessment, and will receive care as usual.

The suggested procedure in this project has shown to be non-invasive and to foster the doctor-patient communication. Also, implementing monitoring of well-being has shown to improve satisfaction with care significantly.

Implementing the standardised monitoring procedure increases the likelihood of detecting individual psychological needs that warrant further attention. In many cases, discussion alone will be sufficient but some patients will need to be referred to a mental health specialist. It is important to know that there is international consensus that addressing psychological issues is integral part of clinical routine in diabetes (ADA, IDF guidelines).
